The Grass Is Always Greener

Why is it that when something bad happens...we automatically think that we must have done something wrong, and we are being punished? At age 6 you stuck gum in your sisters hair and God put a little mark by your name so you can be punished at a time of his choosing. OK, so I'm exaggerating a bit....but when something bad happens...especially when that one bad thing causes a chain reaction of events. -->you have a car accident-->it's your only car and it is totalled AND your arm is broken!-->of course the other driver has no insurance-->you miss several days of work and lose your job--> can't pay your bills-->your utilities are shut off-->child gets sick-->no job = no money= no health insurance etc. etc.

I am pretty certain that at some point in your life you have asked " GOD, what in the world did I do wrong?" "why am I being punished?" I know this because when I have been hit with misfortune... I have the very same thoughts and ask the same questions.

I was a disrespectful teenager, I have spent money I that didn't really have to spend and failed to pay my bills, I have sat at red lights slurping my route 44 cherry lime aide from Sonic and not offered a dime to the man standing on the corner in 90 degree weather begging for work. So of course when something bad happens ...I remember all the things I have done or have not done and think that I am being punished.

Aww come on now...you've been in a similar place at some point too... haven't you? Follow me and lets see if you can relate.

Without fail we stop thinking about the wrongs we have done....and start to wonder why other people are living large and seem to have it made. Especially the ones we know for a fact have done far worse things than we have. So why does SHE have nicer things than I do? We really don't like those people do we?

They live in nice houses, drive nice cars, have worked at the same job for 25 years and never been laid off. Their kids always have nice clothes and brand new shoes. They seem to want for nothing...and to the outside world they appear to be perfect. You see them out in public and at first glance they look so good...maybe you feel jealous?

Then you begin to notice that they are pushy, loud, rude and inconsiderate...their kids are arguing and acting like spoiled brats. When they leave...everyone starts to talk about them...you share what little you know and you learn a few things too. Like how he has been cheating on her for years and about her drinking problem. How the daughter is pregnant and the son is on drugs.

In the middle of it all...you realize that all this gossiping really isn't make you feel good at all. You really don't feel jealous anymore...in fact..you may feel a little mad. You've made some mistakes in your own life, but you trying really hard to live right. These people behave horribly and yet they have everything you want....or do they?

Sometimes we feel that a different circumstance, financial situation, or more possessions will make us happier... only to find that once we reach that goal...we still feel the same as we did before. It is very easy to get caught up in desires and ignore the joys already present in your life. Accept and embrace your current circumstances rather than wasting energy on negative thinking. Recognize everything good and positive. Believe me...it is not as hard as it sounds.

"You say, 'If I had a little more, I should be very satisfied.' You make a mistake. If you are not content with what you have, you would not be satisfied if it were doubled." --Charles Haddon Spurgeon
